OTHER WORK

Sometimes there's a need for documentation that doesn't fall into a neat category like "Manual" or "QuickStart Guide." I've written many press releases, data sheets, application notes, technical notes, white papers/positioning papers, and other documents, typically working collaboratively with subject matter experts such as engineers, chemists, and product specialists. I've also written book chapters, edited books, ghost written articles for placement in trade journals, and created emergency procedures documents. Information needs to be conveyed, and that means doing fast and doing it right.

Here are just a few of the types of projects that I've worked on, in addition to manuals and QuickStart guides:

Application Notes
This application note required spending time with subject matter experts (chemists and applications engineeers), distilling the work already provided by chemists and engineers, and checking reference material so that the person reading it received a concentrated overview of how to best apply a very powerful gas detector most effectively and safely.

White Papers/Positioning Papers
A good overview can lead potential customers to an understanding of your products without getting into the products themselves.  It can also serve as an introduction to possible applications that might not be clear for those unfamiliar with the technology or its applications. Making it clear, easy to grasp, and fast to read are key to a successful document like this.

Articles & Book Chapters
Opportunities to provide articles and book chapters that cover products or technologies come along occasionally, and they can be a good way to establish or reinforce a company's expertise in a technological realm. I've authored more than 100 feature stories and columns for Guitar Player magazine, as well as articles for Billboard, Playback (National Association of Music Merchants trade magazine), Guitar World, Guitar Shop, Device, Polyphony, Bass Player, and other trade and consumer publications. I was also the editor of Guitar Synth & MIDI and contributed chapters and acted as editor for material in Gibson Guitars: 100 Years of An American Icon, The Musician's Home Recording Handbook, and Bass Heroes.
