Writer, editor, web developer, and user interface designer
are among the many hats that Tom Mulhern has worn.
He spent more than 13 years at Guitar Player magazine, reaching
the position of Managing Editor before hitting the "eject"
button and founding Tom Mulhern & Associates in 1990.
In 1997, he began working for Manual 3 (now m3iWorks) and
was placed at Netscape as a web developer in its Information
Systems group, and spent nearly three years working on cutting-edge
intranet design using DHTML and JavaScript.
From late 1999 through the end of 2000, he was the manager
of Support Systems Engineering at Logictier, a startup company
that rapidly grew to 250 employees in two locations. His group
created and organized technical documentation for Logictier's
network operations center, which was responsible for 7x24
monitoring and maintenance of large, complex customer web
sites.
Between late 2000 and late 2001 he was a user interface
designer at another startup, Instantis, designing prototypes
for their innovative web-based database creation and
management suite of software called SiteWand, as well
as documenting help material, editing white papers,
and writing JavaScript for Instantis' external web site.
He is currently writing freelance articles for various
publications and designing user interfaces for some
cutting-edge companies in the software and Internet-related
industries.
Since 1990, Tom Mulhern has been a regular columnist and
contributor, and in some cases consulting or technical editor,
to many magazines in the music industry, including Playback
(the official magazine of the National Association of Music
Merchants), Bass Frontiers, Bass Player, Guitar
World, Guitar One, Guitar Shop, Musician,
Home Recording, and Billboard.
A bassist, guitarist, and electronic musician who started
playing at age 14, he majored in music composition and electronic
music at Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University.
An avid fan of electronic and mechanical technology, he likes
slaving over a hot soldering iron, collecting books (particularly
on Chicago and its history, music, and technologies of all
sorts), researching, and barbecuing.
